This Saturday, August 8: Brown Noise Comedy at Grove 34 in Astoria, 9:30pm. "Comedy that feels like home" -- South Asian, Arab, and Persian comedians, a touring show that has sold out all three previous NYC rounds. Also Saturday at 7:30pm: Balachandra Prabhu vocal concert at Chhandayan Center in Midtown. Two very different Saturdays. Pick deliberately.
August 16: India Day Parade down Madison Avenue, free. August 29: the Gundecha Brothers perform Dhrupad at Chhandayan Center -- the oldest surviving vocal tradition in Indian classical music. The Words section has a line from Nehru. It connects everything in this issue.

Brown Noise Comedy is a touring show created by Pakistani-American comedian Raza Jafri, founder of the East Austin Comedy Club. Desi, South Asian, Arab, and Persian comics -- "nights of comedy that feel like home." Monthly in Chicago, touring nationally. All three previous NYC rounds sold out. This is the Queens edition. Saturday August 8 at 9:30pm at Grove 34 in Astoria -- a four-year-old comedy club founded by Astoria-based comedians who wanted to bring more comedy to the neighborhood. If you are going to the Balachandra Prabhu vocal concert at Chhandayan Center at 7:30pm, this is a natural second stop.

Dhrupad is the oldest surviving vocal tradition in Indian classical music -- older than the Mughal Empire, older than British colonization, predating almost everything in the contemporary world by centuries. The Gundecha Brothers have performed it at Lincoln Center and toured 30 countries. Umakant Gundecha, Anant Ramakant Gundecha on vocal, Akhilesh Gundecha on pakhawaj. Saturday August 29 at 7:30pm at the Chhandayan Center in Midtown. Also Saturday August 29 at 5pm: Desi SNL Episode 3 -- two very different ways to spend the last Saturday of August.
